The Filipino community in Castlegar came together for its most memorable Christmas celebration to date, hosting the biggest Filipino Christmas party in the area. This year, the event took a new direction by opening its doors to the broader community, inviting everyone to experience the unique joy and warmth of a Filipino Christmas.
The party, held at the Castlegar Complex, exceeded all expectations. With an initial plan for 260 guests, the event saw an estimated 300 attendees, as community members continued to arrive throughout the evening. Despite the overwhelming turnout, the organizers ensured everyone had the chance to join the celebration, making the night a resounding success.
Organized under the leadership of Lani Green, the event was the result of a collaborative effort. Planning began in November, with Lani and myself, spearheading the initiative. “It all started with a conversation at the Gusto Ko Asian Store, hoping and praying we could pull this together,” Annie shared.
What made this event truly special was its inclusivity. Invitations were shared across several Facebook groups, encouraging community members to join and experience the festive spirit of a Filipino Christmas—a season that often begins as early as December 1st and stretches into late January or February in the Philippines.
Attendees were treated to a potluck feast, supplemented by additional dishes prepared by the organizers to ensure no one left hungry. The party was filled with music, laughter, and the unmistakable warmth that Filipino gatherings are known for.
The success of the event was made possible by the collective effort of volunteers, donors, and the community. Local businesses stepped up with donations, including gift certificates, gift baskets, and vouchers, while community members contributed whatever they could—whether $20, $50, or $100—to make the celebration happen.
“We’re deeply grateful to everyone who made this event possible,” Annie added. “From the donors and volunteers to the staff at the Castlegar Complex, especially Jen Small, who helped us secure the perfect venue, everyone played a part in making this celebration unforgettable.”
The party marked a milestone for the Filipino community in Castlegar, not only as a celebration of their culture but as a way to share the magic of a Filipino Christmas with their neighbors. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees expressing how much they enjoyed the festivities.
As the Filipino tradition goes, Christmas is not just a day but a season—a time to bring people together and celebrate the spirit of giving, community, and joy. This event was a perfect testament to that tradition.
