On Sunday, June 7, during a memorable evening at the elegant National Arts Centre, the 10th Annual Cappies’ announced this year’s awardees. Pinoy’s pride, and Ottawa resident Bernice Reyes wins as Best Lead Actress for a Musical.

Besting equally talented nominees from various high schools in the National Capital Region, Bernice bagged the award for her outstanding performance as Maria, the role popularized by Hollywood’s Julie Andrews in the much-loved, hit musical “The Sound of Music.”

“I know that playing a lead actress in a musical has a lot of expectations, the Sound of Music is one of my favourites,” writes Bernice on her Facebook page.

Always the humble and grateful young lady, she further states: “I would not achieve this award without the help of a lot of people. First, I would like to thank our director, Mrs. McMillan for trusting me for this huge role in the first place and bringing out the best in me.” She also sends her appreciation and thanks to the production crew, her teachers at Lester B. Pearson Catholic High School and her very supportive family. And, in a manner that seems like truly embracing the role she remarkably played Bernice sends this message: “I would like to thank the Von Trapp children, my children, for trusting me to be your governess and eventually your mother.”

Testament to Bernice’s prodigious talent is eloquently captured by one of the many critics of the production, Cristina Reid of Almonte and District High School who wrote: “Bernice Reyes (Maria) was believable and unforgettable as the sweet, outspoken novice nun turned governess. She captivated the audience and held their attention throughout the entire production. Her singing ability was phenomenal.”

The Cappies Award comes only months after Bernice won as Ottawa Idol 2014. Only 16, she has been in the limelight a lot where her captivating voice and matured singing skills have led her so far. Prior to topping Ottawa Idol Bernice recorded “Hear Our Prayer”, Ottawa Catholic Board’s new theme song. In May, she top-billed “Red Carpet” concert at Algonquin’s Commons Theatre. And late last month, she released her first single “This is Our Time” a beautiful song of sweet success.  This is Our Time can be heard at the top of every hour at www.tinigpinoy.net and digital copies of the song can be downloaded from iTunes and CD Baby for a small fee.

This is Our Time is a fitting title for this very talented young lady’s first single. With her dedication, desire to succeed and the support of her growing legions of fans, this may very well be the time when Bernice Reyes’ star shines brighter.
